Being a good steward of Christ is about faithfully managing all that God has entrusted to us, from our time, talents, resources, relationships, and even the earth itself, all for His glory and the advancement of His Kingdom. It’s not just about doing good deeds, but about aligning every aspect of our lives with God’s will.
How can you grow in your role as a steward of Christ?
1. Cultivate a life of prayer and reading the scripture
A steward cannot serve well without knowing the heart and mind of the Master. Regular prayer and Bible study are essential for deepening our relationship with God and discerning His guidance. Through Scripture, we learn the principles of godly living, and through prayer, we communicate with our Creator, aligning our will with His. Set aside intentional, undistracted time each day to grow spiritually and reflect on His Word.
2. Serve others with humility and love
Jesus modeled servant leadership by washing the feet of His disciples and giving His life for others. As His followers, we are called to emulate that selfless love. Stewardship means using our hands, hearts, and time to meet the needs of those around us. Whether it’s feeding the hungry, mentoring youth, comforting the lonely, or simply offering a listening ear, every act of service is an act of worship when done in Christ’s name.
3. Use your gifts to advance God’s kingdom
God has uniquely equipped each of us with talents, skills, and spiritual gifts. Good stewardship involves recognizing these gifts and actively using them to build up the body of Christ. Are you musically inclined? Serve in worship. Gifted in administration? Help organize church ministries. Passionate about teaching? Lead a Bible study or serve in children’s ministry. Whatever your gifts, offer them back to God for His purposes.
4. Honor God with your time, finances, and priorities
Biblical stewardship goes beyond money. It calls for a responsible and intentional approach to every resource God gives us. Budget your finances with generosity and integrity, and steward your energy by investing in what truly matters for eternity.
5. Proclaim the Gospel doldly and compassionately
The great commission is not optional; it’s a core part of our stewardship. Sharing the message of Christ’s love, grace, and salvation is one of the greatest responsibilities we have. This can take many forms, including personal conversations, acts of kindness that open doors to faith, social media posts, or global missions. Whatever the method, let your life and words point others to Jesus.
6. Reflect Christ’s character in daily life
Being a steward of Christ means embodying His love and truth in all relationships. In a world marked by division and self-interest, let your life be a testimony of grace, patience, forgiveness, and peace. People are always watching, and your conduct may be the only “Bible” someone ever reads.
7. Care for God’s creation
God entrusted humanity with the care of the earth (as we read in Genesis 1:28). Environmental stewardship is a spiritual responsibility, not a political agenda. Conserve resources, reduce waste, and make ethical choices that reflect a reverence for the creator and His handiwork. Taking care of creation honors the One who made it.
8. Give generously and joyfully
Generosity is not measured by how much we give, but by the heart with which we give. God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7), and when we give, whether financially, with our time, or through our possessions, we participate in God’s redemptive work. Make giving a regular and prayerful part of your life.
9. Stay rooted in a Christian community
Faith was never meant to be lived in isolation. Being part of a church family provides encouragement, accountability, and opportunities to grow and serve. Join a small group, participate in church ministries, and invest in relationships with other believers who challenge you to live faithfully.
10. Surrender fully to God’s sovereign plan
True stewardship is rooted in surrender. We are not the owners of our lives; God is. Trusting in His providence means releasing our plans, ambitions, and even our uncertainties into His hands. When we acknowledge that everything we have is His, our perspective shifts from ownership to stewardship.
Being a good steward of Christ is a lifelong journey of faithfulness. It is not about perfection, but about intentional living that honors God in every area of life. By nurturing our relationship with Him, loving others, using our gifts, and living with purpose, we reflect His glory and participate in His mission on earth.
